Los Angelyse 03:00
You only call me when I’m sleeping. I guess L.A. will do that to you. I guess L.A. will do a lot of things to you. Whenever I see you, you are smiling. I guess the woods will do that to you. I guess the woods will do a lot of things to you. Ch. Annalyse, I hope you’re doing good in California. I hope you’re happy like you should be, and the weather’s warmer. I hope you got what you wanted. Because I want what you want if you want this. I always wondered if you’d marry him.
He’s got a lot of good things going for him. You’re a good thing going for him. I always wondered how you’d be with children. You know it never hurts to be forgiven. Annalyse, honey, you’re a damn good woman. Ch.

The hour is awful late. Won’t you come and sleep with me? I’ll be and kind to you If you put up with my mistakes. You can think anything you want. Go ahead and share your thoughts. I was in love before I met you. There will be love at any cost. Waltz away the moonlight. Sleep away the sunshine. You’re the Lord’s work, And you’re doing it good. These pancakes, they won’t cook themselves. Keep them happy. Oh, honey, give them hell. Just tell me I make your heart hurt. Robin’s singing. It’s not yet 6 AM. I ain’t ever going back to bed again. But something’s different. And, honey, you’re here with him. And I ain’t ever going back to your bed again.

Surprise me. I’ve been living in this pipe dream for way too long. Surprise me. I kinda like this ride; I don’t wanna get off. Ch. I’ll do anything you ask of me. I will do everything you say. I will be your baby. I will be your baby. I will be your baby. Surprise me. Whatever you had in mind, it’s good with me. Surprise me. No, I don’t give a damn about where we go to eat. Ch. Surprise me. Now that there is a light I can’t shut it off. Surprise me. Don’t just leave me here with all your haunted thoughts. Ch. I will be your baby. I will be your baby. I will be your baby.

I can hear you coming Coming up those steps You can smell the tobacco Stale on my breath You know that scent of Old cigarettes That I’ve started smoking Now that you’ve left You always hated them It’s no secret Remember the time when I first told you that I had one? You were so disgusted. But now that you’re gone Well, ain’t no one gonna tell me shit And I can do whatever I want To burn you away real quick Ch. To burn you away Take the smoke - take the flame Someday I will get To the point where I don’t choke with every breath But by then, you’ll be so far away. So far away. I’m not smoking these for show It’s not some cancerous charade But if I can’t be someone you love Then I’ll have to be something you hate As I choke As the smoke curls around my face If I catch you looking over here I’m gonna look away. Ch.

I wanna be your California king, And wake up next to you in the morning when it’s freezing. And if you have to turn the heat off ‘Cause you know the gas ain’t cheap, Well, honey, I could give a damn, If you just lie here next to me. I wanna be your wildcard lover, And stand beside your side when everybody else expects another. And every panorama is just a new place to discover ‘Cause I’m here for you in the long haul, After all. Ch. It’s a dream; it’s a wish. It’s some crazy shit. I must have just lucked out, And don’t know how to deal with it. I tried to be cool, But I sank like a stone. You’re rolling your eyes, And I’m fumbling my lines. But you shoot me that smile, And I’m mesmerized. So, honey, how do you feel, About taking it home? I wanna see your arms wide open. You’re laughing, and you’re smiling, And you’re messing up the timing when you’re joking. You hardly said a word to me, But I knew just what I wanted. Kiss me again. I kinda liked it - let’s do that often. Ch. I wanna be your California king, And, honey, well, you can be anything. If you got time and you got patience And you could see yourself hanging around me. Well then I could give a damn about any of those other things. Ch.

Sometimes you say things like, “In the spring…” I guess it means you’re planning to remember me. Sometimes you say things in the future tense. Sometimes I wonder if it’s really ever what you meant. Ch. When you’ll have to get my band to come and tell me that you want me. And I’ll have to come and see you run outside. I’m looking forward to seeing you in the same place in a different light. Sometimes you say things like, “We’ll do that next.” I guess it means that whatever this is can’t be that much of a mess. Sometimes you say things that I’d never expect. When you’re asking for the ring, and you’re laughing while I’m asking for the check. Ch. And all my wildest dreams, They all look the same. I see your face. I call out your name. I thought I was crazy. And that may still be so. But now that you’re here, I ain’t letting you go. Ch. I’m looking forward to seeing you in the same place in a different light.

Erica 03:09
Ch. Erica, You’re quite a character. I’m here with you, In your hysteria. You don’t shoot straight. You don’t say? Is it too cold to go outside? Are you nervous about the ice? Purse your lips and roll your eyes. Wave it off with a smile so wry. There are better ways to die. Ch. Are you annoyed by the cheer? Sick and tired of this time of year? Bored as hell and freezing Inside a library? I saw the photos; this much is clear. Ch. x 2 Get up. It’s an awful, cold, and quiet morning. The milk At the top of your latte’s already foaming. Here’s some sugar. Have another. I sorry I bugged you. Well... whatever. Ch. x 2 Erica Erica Erica Erica

Thank you, first and foremost, Julian Pitt — the best and most fun multimedia artist I know or know of — for turning these sounds and words from sonic compost into songs and for making everything look so damn good.

Thank you, Shawn Barry (shawnbarry.bandcamp.com) for lending your piano-playing, critical ear, advice, and sense of humor to this project.

Thank you, Cody Zeger, for your love, support, and encouragement about these songs and otherwise. You were the first to hear many of these, and your enthusiasm is the reason I even brought these songs home to California.

Thank you to people who listened to and offered input, advice, and excitement about many of these songs during the construction process: Alejandra Benitez, Sasha Teninty, Jess Tomkins, and Cody Zeger.

And enormous thanks to Jack Hochberg, Anne and Mike Hochberg, Peter Fox, Beverly Xu, Alysse Austin, David Ryan Adams, Caitlin Rose, Andrew Combs, Jason Isbell, and Sasha Teninty -- for all of your contributions, whether you knew it or not.
